OMC MED ENERGY AMONG THE PARTICIPANTS

AT THE UN CONFERENCE ON CLIMATE CHANGE (COP27)

WITH A MEDITERRANEAN PAVILION PRESENT FOR THE FIRST TIME

 Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt - 6 to 18 November 2022

Ravenna, 12 September 2022 - For the first time in its history, OMC Med Energy will participate in the forthcoming United Nations Conference on Climate Change 2022 (COP 27) scheduled to take place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt from 6 to 18 November.

And also for the first time in the history of the COP, the 2022 edition will host a Mediterranean Pavilion to highlight both the urgent climate change challenges the region is facing and the innovative solutions already developed across the Mediterranean to address them.

The initiative, in which OMC Med Energy is a partner, is led by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) together with the United Nations Environment Programme - Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP-MAP) and the PRIMA Foundation.

“In this context,” explains Monica Spada, president of OMC Med Energy, “OMC Med Energy could not fail to lend its support, having been involved with the Mediterranean area and the crucial challenge of energy transition for several years now.

And it does this by building on the foundation already laid by energy companies over the past decade to move towards an increasingly low-carbon energy mix:  a holistic perspective, which includes all forms of energy and broadens the base of energy players.

Participation in COP 27 is one of the most important events in the run-up to May 2023, when the 30th edition of OMC Med Energy will discuss how to reshape the energy industry in accordance with the transition and with the aim of ensuring sustainable development.”

OMC Med Energy will feature in three sessions. The first, chaired by Monica Spada (President of OMC Med Energy) and entitled 'The crucial role of a Mediterranean partnership', will discuss the political, economic and financial conditions needed to develop a new pan-Mediterranean agreement for achieving both short and long-term goals. In particular, the session will focus on how to develop and integrate national energy markets into a regional low-carbon market and foster a North-South Mediterranean alliance to ensure the sustainable growth of the entire region.

In the second session, chaired by Sabina Bigi (Associate Professor Università di Roma "La Sapienza" - CO2Geonet) and Edoardo Dellarole (Chair OMC 2023 Programme Committee), entitled 'The crucial role of a Mediterranean partnership - Reaching net zero in the Mediterranean with CO2 capture and storage', the focus will be on the issue of capturing and storing CO2 in order to help achieve climate goals. One cannot understate the great potential for CO2 storage in the Mediterranean region (both offshore and onshore) and the possibility of initiating cross-border collaborations between the most industrialised countries in southern Europe.

Dellarole will also chair the third session entitled 'The crucial role of a Mediterranean partnership - Renewable energies'. The focus of the discussion will be the enormous untapped potential of renewable energy in its various forms, especially in the southern and eastern Mediterranean. OMC Med Energy will explore this topic in depth with contributions from the main European associations of companies producing energy from renewable sources.  COP27, also by virtue of its important focus on the Mediterranean region, will then play a leading role from 22 to 25 May 2023 at the 30th edition of OMC Med Energy, dedicated to "Reshaping the Energy Industry: Action for Transition'. In addition to developing issues relating to energy transition, activities such as the Innovation Room and the arena in which start-ups, emerging companies, researchers and students will present their ideas, projects and solutions on sustainable business models, will also be promoted.
