WHO WE ARE

2G Carbons is a spin-off from the University of Bologna, combining research and innovation to develop sustainable solutions for wastewater treatment and agriculture, reducing pollution and promoting circular economy.

PROJECT

2G Carbons has developed a scalable system using MgOCarbon, among other technologies, to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater, recovering these nutrients (N and P) to produce eco-friendly fertilizers. Additionally, this system also reduces COD. This patented solution optimizes water treatment efficiency while ensuring compliance with EU environmental regulations, including Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 on fertiliser products, Directive 91/676/EEC on nitrate pollution, and the new Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, which imposes stricter limits on nitrogen and phosphorus discharge. 

ADVANTAGES

The solution offers numerous benefits, including a significant reduction in phosphorus (up to 99%) and nitrogen (up to 80%) in wastewater, making it a valuable tool for sustainable wastewater management. It recovers essential nutrients for eco-friendly fertilizers, supports EU Green Deal goals, and complies with strict EU regulations on nutrient discharge. This adaptable system helps wastewater treatment plants reduce operational costs, meet the latest limits on wastewater treatment, and enhance compliance with EU regulations, contributing to the Circular Economy Action Plan.

APPLICATION SECTORS

The solution is applicable across various sectors, including industrial and municipal wastewater treatment. It also supports sustainable and organic agriculture by providing nutrient-rich, eco-friendly fertilizers, and plays a key role in the production of environmentally-friendly fertilizers.

SIEve's solution is cost-effective, easy to scale, and promotes circularity by using recyclable materials. It reduces pollutants in one step with high efficiency, solving issues that current technologies like precipitation and adsorption struggle to address.

APPLICATION SECTORS 

We target industrial wastewater treatment, addressing the removal of heavy metals, refractory organics, and microbial loads, whether these pollutants are present individually or in complex combinations. Our current focus is the metal surface treatment industry, offering solutions for effluent treatment and metal recovery.

Our project implements the scaled-up synthesis and industrialization of a revolutionary composite photocatalyst (patent: US12115519B2) and a bundled photoreactor to enable industrially feasible green hydrogen production by water splitting and direct solar illumination as the only feedstock.

The StarLIGH2T solution operates at room temperature and utilizes up to 90% of the solar spectrum, compared to 5% of established photocatalysts, increasing the green hydrogen yield by 7 times in TRL 4 implementations. StarLIGH2T revolutionizes photocatalysis by finally making it industrially viable.

Using direct sunlight as feedstock and low-complexity infrastructure, the StarLIGH2T solution is easily implementable and adaptable to diverse green hydrogen application sectors. Among these, the naval propulsion and fuel sector is our main target application.
